My Journey

I’m often asked what attracted me to costume/ dress making and I usually reply with a whole combination of things from inspiring teachers to my love of period dramas and musical theatre. I have always been interested in textiles and fashion and so to study textiles for GCSE and A- levels was an easy choice. I was fortunate enough to have an amazing textiles teacher who shared her passion for designing and creating fashion. She inspired me to think outside the box and have a go with unusual materials and designs.

I decided to continue on the creative arts journey choosing to study Costume and Performance Design and Making at the Art’s University Bournemouth. I learnt so much on the course including tailoring, corsetry and the art of making historically accurate pieces such as bustles, corsets and petticoats. I enjoyed working on the intricate details, learning new skills, and working with a whole variety of materials. I especially loved the fabric trips we went on to source materials for our projects, Goldhawk road in London was by far the best place to shop. Creating my final piece was such an incredible experience. I worked with a student designer, sourced the materials, and replicated and created a dress inspired by Elizabeth I. It was a creation I’ll never forget and helped me to secure a first class honours degree in Costume making.

Since graduating I have worked on a variety of projects including creating Pantomime costumes for the Oxford Playhouse house production of Robin Hood (2021) and Cinderella (2022). During lockdown I started my own business by creating face masks and scrunchies to sell online. My dream is to now expand my business by creating bespoke pieces for individuals and theatre whilst offering lessons to inspire others to take up the art of sewing.
